Mali - Training & Literacy
Background
The current project is an extension of a project that was realised between 2000 and 2004, and which saw the creation of 13 village schools in Mali.
Description of the prevailing situation
In the regions of Sikasso, Koulikoro and Kayes, there is a need for schools in those villages of more than 5000 inhabitants that are more than five kilometres from the nearest school. This would mean more than 200 schools. “The Republic of Mali Decade of Education Program” (Le Programme Décennal de l'Education de la République du Mali - PRODEC) aims to improve educational quality and levels of school attendance in Mali. The current project, entirely within the logic of PRODEC, targets the three above-cited regions.
Projet description
The project has several goals:
- to continue the development of pedagogical materials: this involves translation, preparation, conception, publication and distribution of documentation for parents and communities, for the teachers, for the pupils and for the follow-up and evaluation of the schools project;
- follow-up for the schools developed within the previous project: personnel from the NGO “Victoire” visit each school twice a week in order to help the teachers apply the new programmes and materials and to encourage the Parent-Teacher-Association to continue their training in the field;
- pre-adolescent literacy: this programme involved 7 villages with schools within a rural area. The village chooses its literacy tutors and the booklets used contain short stories with a moral message.
Duration of project: 2006 - 2009
