Brief history and description of prevailing situation

 

Together with the NGO Victory from Bamako, our partner since 2001, we have realized the creation of 13 primary schools in the rural areas of Mali in the years 2004/2005. During a follow-up visit in the field in 2006, our president, Fernand Schaber was approached by our local partner, upon demand of the villagers to provide access to drinking water for 8 out of  our 13 constructed schools. 

As the Malian Ministry of Education warmly recommend the disponibility of water points nearby schools, this demand proved to be absolutely justified. In March 2007 Unity Foundation introduced a cofinancing demand at the Ministry of Cooperation in Luxembourg and the necessary steps for the accomplishment of the drillings were undertaken.

 

Project description

 

Besides the practical component of the implementation (geological studies of the ground, selection of the constructor, drillings...) it is important to underline the part of the formation integrated in our project. In order to guarantee its durability,  village committees are set up and their members receive a formation regarding the correct use of the wells and craftsmen for the repairs are trained.

 

Not less important is the formation of the teachers from the various schools regarding matters of personal hygiene and environment.  

 

In addition to the students and teachers who are the direct beneficiaries of this project, these wells will have an important impact on the daily life of the villagers, especially for the women who will no longer have to carry water over kilometres.  It is understood that the health of the local population is affected in a positive way.

 

According to OMS sources, the lack of access to drinking water is responsible for 6% of the mortality rate worldwide and with regard to the health, unsanitary water is responsible for 22% of diseases for children under 14.
