On 30 September, an earthquake shook the city of Padang in Indonesia and the Mentawai Islands where Unity Foundation maintains 8 Education Centers.
According to the most recent information from our local partner, there is tremendous damage, but fortunately it seems that our teachers, children and their families would have no casualties to report.

Given the catastrophic state that reigned there after the earthquake, it was impossible to obtain information on consequences from the islands for several days, such as telephone lines and power were cut. The Hotel Ambacang in Padang where the Luxembourg delegation composed of one representative from Unity Foundation, the Ministry of Cooperation and RTL stayed during our recent mission in February, was completely destroyed and some 200 people died in the debris.

In Padang, the house where our teachers and field coordinators stayed before travelling to the islands as well as the central office of the Foundation YBTI on Siberut / Mentawai are seriously damaged and no longer available for now .

Together with our partner, we are trying to find a way of helping them in a most effective way. As the entire city is under the debris, this is not easy.
